A Beloved Practice With Uneven Evidence
Companion planting — the practice of growing specific plants near each other for mutual benefit — is one of the most deeply held beliefs in home gardening. The Three Sisters combination of corn, beans, and squash, planting basil near tomatoes, and marigolds as a pest deterrent are all repeated as established fact in gardening circles.
Some of these practices have genuine scientific support. Others are garden folklore passed down through generations of gardeners who observed anecdotes rather than controlled experiments. Understanding which is which helps you make planting decisions based on evidence rather than tradition — and frees you from following advice that doesn’t actually help.
What Has Strong Evidence: Nitrogen Fixation
The most well-documented companion planting benefit is the nitrogen-fixing relationship between legumes (beans, peas, clover) and the Rhizobium bacteria that colonize their roots. Legumes capture atmospheric nitrogen and convert it to a plant-available form. When legume roots decompose after harvest, this nitrogen becomes available to neighboring and subsequent plants.
This is chemistry, not folklore — the mechanism is well-understood and the benefit is measurable. Growing beans alongside corn (as in the Three Sisters) genuinely provides nitrogen that supports corn’s high nitrogen demands. The practical takeaway: rotating legumes through your garden beds and using them as companion plants with heavy feeders is a sound, evidence-based practice.
Marigolds: Partially True, Mostly Overstated
The widespread belief that marigolds deter pests generally is a significant overstatement of more limited evidence. What research does support: French marigolds (Tagetes patula specifically, not all marigolds) release compounds from their roots that suppress certain soil nematodes — root-attacking microscopic worms that damage tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. This effect requires dense planting of French marigolds interplanted throughout the bed, not just a border of marigolds around the perimeter, and the effect builds over a full growing season.
What isn’t well-supported: the idea that marigolds generally repel aphids, whiteflies, or other common garden pests. The volatile compounds marigolds emit above ground have shown only limited and inconsistent pest deterrence in controlled studies. Marigolds are beautiful and worthwhile garden companions, but they’re not a pest management system on their own.
Basil and Tomatoes: The Beloved Pairing Examined
The claim that basil improves tomato flavor or growth when planted nearby is one of the most popular companion planting beliefs — and one of the least supported by evidence. No well-controlled study has demonstrated that basil volatiles improve tomato flavor chemistry or accelerate growth.
What is true: basil and tomatoes have similar cultural requirements (warmth, sun, water) and grow well in the same conditions. Basil planted densely can suppress weed growth in bed spaces between tomato plants. And planting herbs you use frequently near your tomatoes means you’re more likely to harvest regularly, which improves both crops. These are real benefits — just not the mystical flavor enhancement that gardening lore claims.
Trap Cropping: A Companion Planting Strategy That Actually Works
Trap cropping — deliberately planting a preferred pest host near the crop you want to protect, to draw pests to a sacrificial plant — has genuine research support and is used in commercial agriculture. Planting blue Hubbard squash (which aphids and squash vine borers strongly prefer) near zucchini and summer squash concentrates pests on the trap crop, where they can be monitored and managed.
Nasturtiums as a trap crop for aphids works on a similar principle — aphids colonize nasturtiums preferentially, and the nasturtiums can be sprayed, removed, or left as a sacrifice. This is a companion planting strategy worth deliberately implementing, rather than a passive benefit from proximity.
