The Most Misdiagnosed Plumbing Problem
Low water pressure is among the most frustrating home plumbing problems because it affects daily life (slow shower, inadequate dishwasher performance, long toilet fill times) and because the causes are so varied. The same symptom — weak water flow — can result from a problem at the municipal supply, at your home’s pressure regulator, at a single fixture, in your home’s pipes, or in your hot water system specifically. Treating the wrong cause wastes time and money.
A systematic diagnosis that starts with the simplest and most accessible cause and works toward the more complex will identify the actual problem in most cases before professional involvement is needed.
Step 1: Is It One Fixture or the Whole House?
The first diagnostic question: is low pressure limited to a single fixture or present throughout the home? Test multiple fixtures — a bathroom faucet, the kitchen sink, an outdoor hose bib — and note whether pressure is consistently low everywhere or only in specific locations.
Low pressure at a single fixture almost always points to a problem at or near that fixture: a clogged aerator (the mesh screen at the faucet tip that accumulates mineral deposits), a partially closed supply valve, or a failing cartridge in the faucet or showerhead. These are simple, inexpensive fixes accessible to almost anyone. Whole-house low pressure is a different problem entirely.
The Aerator and Showerhead Check: Start Here
Aerators — the small threaded screen assembly at the tip of every faucet — clog with mineral deposits (limescale) over time, dramatically reducing flow at the fixture without affecting pressure elsewhere in the system. This is the most common cause of low flow at individual fixtures and the easiest to address.
Unscrew the aerator by hand or with pliers (wrap in cloth to protect the finish), soak in white vinegar for 30–60 minutes, rinse, and reinstall. If the aerator is too corroded to clean effectively, a replacement is $3–$8 at any hardware store. Showerheads accumulate similar deposits in their nozzles — the same vinegar soak (with the showerhead in a zip-lock bag of vinegar) clears them without removal.
The Pressure Regulator: The Whole-House Cause Most People Don’t Check
Homes on municipal water supply typically have a pressure reducing valve (PRV) installed where the main water supply enters the home. This valve reduces high municipal supply pressure (which can exceed 100 PSI) to the safe residential range of 40–80 PSI. PRVs have a lifespan of 10–15 years; a failing PRV can cause either low pressure (if it’s restricting flow excessively) or high pressure (if it’s failing open).
A PRV has an adjustment screw that allows pressure to be raised or lowered within its design range. If your whole-house pressure is uniformly low and your home has a PRV (check near the main shutoff), attempt an adjustment of the screw clockwise (to increase pressure) by no more than a quarter turn, then recheck pressure with a gauge. A PRV that can’t be adjusted or that doesn’t hold its setting needs replacement — typically $200–$400 in parts and professional labor.
Hard Water and Pipe Scaling: The Long-Term Cause
In homes with hard water, mineral deposits accumulate inside galvanized steel pipes over decades — gradually narrowing the interior diameter and restricting flow. This is a progressive problem that develops over years and is more common in homes with older galvanized supply pipes.
Galvanized pipe scaling isn’t economically practical to clean out — the pipes need to be replaced, typically with copper or PEX. The good news: this project also upgrades old plumbing that may have other issues. A whole-home repipe is a significant investment ($4,000–$15,000 depending on home size and complexity) but addresses not just the pressure problem but the water quality and corrosion issues that accompany aged galvanized piping.
