The age is stamped in a code on the serial number plate — look up your brand’s date code format, as manufacturers use different systems.

Other warning signs: rusty water from the hot tap (internal tank corrosion), rumbling or popping sounds during heating (sediment accumulation causing localized boiling), visible corrosion or moisture around the tank base or relief valve, and noticeably reduced recovery time (the tank is heating water more slowly than it used to). Any of these in a unit over 8 years old signals that replacement planning should begin.

Tank vs. Tankless: The Honest Comparison

Tankless (on-demand) water heaters heat water instantaneously as it passes through, eliminating standby heat loss from a stored tank. They deliver unlimited hot water to a household whose simultaneous hot water demands stay within the unit’s flow rate capacity. Their limitations: high purchase cost ($800–$2,000 for a whole-home gas unit versus $400–$900 for a standard tank), significant installation cost for gas line upsizing or electrical service upgrades, and the need for descaling maintenance in hard water areas.

Tank water heaters are simpler, less expensive, and easier to maintain. They work well in most households and are the clear lower-cost choice upfront. For large households with high simultaneous hot water demand, or for homeowners committed to long-term energy efficiency, a quality tankless unit repays its premium over time through energy savings.

Heat Pump Water Heaters: The Option Most Homeowners Haven’t Considered

Heat pump water heaters (also called hybrid electric water heaters) use the same refrigeration cycle as a heat pump to extract heat from ambient air and transfer it to the water tank — producing hot water at 2–3 times the energy efficiency of a standard electric resistance water heater. In operational cost they compare favorably to gas water heaters in many markets, and federal tax credits (check current IRA provisions) significantly offset the higher purchase price.

The limitation: they require a space with sufficient air volume (typically 700+ cubic feet) and appropriate temperature range (they work poorly in spaces below 40°F). A basement or utility room is typically appropriate; a closet or very small mechanical room may not be. For homeowners with electric-only homes looking for significant hot water energy savings, the heat pump water heater is the most overlooked high-value option.

Size Matters: A Replacement Common Mistake

Replacing a water heater with the same size as the previous unit assumes the previous unit was correctly sized for the household — which is often not the case. Households grow; hot water demand changes. A 40-gallon tank water heater that was marginal for the household for years should be replaced with a 50-gallon unit, not another 40-gallon.

The first-hour rating (FHR) on tank water heaters is the most useful sizing specification: it indicates how many gallons of hot water the unit can deliver in the first hour of use starting from a fully heated tank. Calculate your household’s peak morning demand (showers, dishwasher, laundry if run simultaneously) and choose a unit whose FHR meets or exceeds that demand.
